Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences celebrated a round anniversary

This March marked 100 years since the commencement of university forestry education in Prague

Representatives of foreign and Czech forestry and wood sciences institutions, Czech universities and faculties at the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague met on Friday, 15 March 2019, to celebrate the commencement of university forestry education in Prague, which laid the foundation stone of the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences, CZU in Prague as we know it today. At the occasion of this momentous event, a conference was held under the title “The Future of Forestry and Wood Sciences in the Changing World”, hosting four world-renowned scholars. The first paper “Forestry Zoology Yesterday, Wildlife Biology Today, and Whatever Comes Next” was presented by prof. Hynek Burda. Prof. Bill S. Hansson’s paper “Smelling to Survive – Insect Olfactory Ecology” received great acclaim. After the break, prof. Andrew M. Liebhold followed up with a paper titled “Biological Invasions in Forests: A Challenge to Sustainable Forest Management”, and the conference was brought to a close with a paper “Increase in Consumption of Wood in the Czech Republic - Old Expectations, New Challenges” delivered by prof. Petr Horáček.

The papers were responded to by inspiring discussions. Questions were asked also by journalists present at the conference. The ceremonial closing of the conference, with musical accompaniment, was held in the National Agricultural Museum in Prague, which opened for the guests its expositions, including the museum roof giving on to the breath-taking view of the capital city. The Faculty’s Dean, prof. Marek Turčáni, gave an appreciation speech, directed also at prof. Ivan Roček, a crucial figure for initiating these celebrations.

The following day, the foreign guests went on an excursion to Kostelec nad Černými lesy, where they were shown the diversity of the forest cover growing on the premises of the University Forest Establishment as well as presentations of forest management in the Czech Republic. The guests then moved on to see the Chateau in Kostelec, ending the excursion with ceremonious planting of a memorable lime tree at the occasion of 100 years since the commencement of university forestry education in Prague.
