The Association, known as the "Network of European Agricultural (Tropically and sub-tropically oriented) Universities and scientific complexes Related with Agricultural development" or, in short, the NATURA European Association, was created on 13 and 14 October 1988 at Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. This non-profit making organization aims to develop concerted actions in the following fields:

  • Tropical and Subtropical Agriculture
  • Natural resources
  • Forestry
  • Food and human nutrition
  • Veterinary medicine
  • Fisheries

NATURA objectives
The essential objectives of the organization are to develop concerted actions in the main fields between the European member institutions and partners in developing countries, to promote the institutional reinforcement of universities, national research centres and partners in developing countries, to better allocate the scientific and technical potential in this field among the NATURA members and to allow mobilisation of funds to reach these objectives.

The Association undertakes both direct and indirect activities to achieve its aims, including the organization of seminars and symposia, the creation of study schemes and research projects, and the publication of reports, newsletters and books.

Projects
The  NATURA Association supports joint projects for research or development training in all areas related to Tropical Agriculture. These projects are normally undertaken by NATURA members and our developing country partners, usually with the support from international and donor agencies. NATURA projects include building joint training modules, undertaking joint research projects, publishing learning materials, evaluating international projects, building institutional capacity and promoting student/staff mobility. NATURA promotes its projects after evaluations by the Board and/or special committees.  The NATURA label is given to the most significant projects, whose results are evaluated in accordance with the NATURA quality assurance criteria.
