ELLS 2023 - Join the live stream of the conference

Join the live stream of the programme on 17th of November morning here: https://ells2023.uni-hohenheim.de/panel_discussion

The keynote on “Basic research and education on integrative taxonomy and biodiversity” and the panel discussion “Food production in times of mass extinction - starving for biodiversity“ will be streamed so that colleagues or students unable to come to Hohenheim in person may attend the discussions online. Global food, environment, and sustainability: Around 300 students from all over Europe will meet on 17 and 18 November, 2023, for a scientific discussion on these topics. The Euroleague for Life Sciences (ELLS) invites students from its member and partner universities to participate in the Scientific Student Conference (SSC). Its motto is “The Power of Science – Many Perspectives on our World” and it will take place at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart. One highlight this year: A public Science Talk on “Food production in times of mass extinction – starving for biodiversity?” to which the public is cordially invited. The event will also be broadcast live. ELLS is a network of leading universities in the life sciences. It consists of a total of twelve universities, two of which are non-European partners. Experiencing the atmosphere of a scientific conference and meeting people from many different countries, disciplines, and universities – these are important aspects of the ELLS Scientific Student Conference (SSC). Students can present their own scientific papers at the conference. Prizes will be awarded for the best presentations and posters.

A great deal of heart and soul has gone into the topics on which the students will exchange views at the University of Hohenheim on 17 and 18 November 2023. After all, the focus is on the major issues of our time – from biodiversity to climate change to food security.

Public Science Talk on world food and biodiversity

This year will have an additional highlight: A Science Talk (panel discussion) on “Food production in times of mass extinction – starving for biodiversity?”. On 17 November 2023 at 10 a.m., researchers, students, and practitioners will discuss conflicting goals in food security and species conservation in the Audimax of the University of Hohenheim. The panel will be moderated by renowned journalist and author Dr. Tanja Busse. The event will be held in English, and registration is not required.

ELLS is a network of leading universities in the life sciences that have been collaborating since 2001 on topics such as natural resource management, agricultural, animal and forest sciences, food sciences, and environmental sciences. It consists of a total of twelve universities, two of which are non-European partners. The first Scientific Student Conference was held in 2009. The student event will be accompanied by the ELLS General Assembly and Forum: Managers, researchers and lecturers, and other network stakeholders meet the day before the SSC. Their topic this year: “Communicating (about) Biodiversity”. GAF 2023: https://ells2023.uni-hohenheim.de/gaf2023

Serving the life sciences for 22 years

ELLS is particularly committed to the expansion of student mobility in order to provide graduates with excellent qualifications for the demands of the labor market. Under the motto “Study ELLSwhere,” the network offers numerous summer schools and semesters abroad at member universities in addition to the SSC. Other opportunities include research internships and student case study competitions. Eleven Master’s degree programs in the life sciences offer the possibility to obtain an international multiple degree – including experience abroad. Each year, approximately 800 to 1,000 students participate in exchange programs, joint summer schools, and the SSC (as of 2021/22).

BACKGROUND: Euroleague for Life Sciences (ELLS)

Founded in 2001 on the initiative of Wageningen University and Research, the network promotes cooperation among Europe’s leading universities in the fields of agriculture, food, forestry, and environmental, and veterinary sciences in both research and teaching. So far, the network has financed joint activities from the member universities’ own funds. Members are the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences Vienna (Austria), Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Sweden), University of Hohenheim (Germany), Wageningen University and Research (Netherlands), Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (Czech Republic), Warsaw University of Life Sciences (Poland), Faculty Of Bioscience Engineering – Ghent University (Belgium), Norwegian University of Life Sciences (Norway), Estonian University of Life Sciences (Estonia), L'institut Agro (France), and – as network partners outside Europe – the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment (Israel) and Lincoln University (New Zealand). ELLS website: https://www.euroleague-study.org/
