Trip to Bečov nad Teplou & SOOS Reserve
On Saturday, 16th August, we set off on a memorable day trip that combined cultural heritage, scenic landscapes, and natural wonders. Departing from the CZU campus on a sunny morning, the weather was ideal for our adventure—not too hot and with no rain in sight.
Our first stop was the charming town of Bečov nad Teplou, where we had a refreshing pause at Mlsný medvěd Café & Creperie. Just steps from the castle, this cozy café treated us to homemade pancakes, cakes, and coffee, and even offered local artisan gifts and glassware.
Energized, we explored Bečov Castle, home to one of Europe’s most significant Romanesque treasures: the Reliquary of St. Maurus. This intricately decorated 13th-century shrine, once hidden underground for decades, impressed us with its gilded silver, gemstones, and remarkable history. We also climbed the castle tower, rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding forested hills.
From there, our bus journey continued through the picturesque Slavkov Forest. The winding countryside roads offered glimpses of small Sudety villages, each carrying echoes of the region’s complex history. Thanks to our skilled driver, we navigated the narrow roads smoothly while enjoying the scenery.
By lunchtime, we arrived at Selský dvůr Restaurant in Nový Drahov. This beautifully restored rural farmhouse served us traditional Czech cuisine in a warm, rustic setting—just what we needed after the morning’s discoveries.
Our afternoon was dedicated to the SOOS National Nature Reserve, often called the “Czech Yellowstone.” Walking along wooden trails, we marveled at bubbling mineral springs, peat bogs, and rare “mud volcanoes.” The area’s unique ecosystem, with its mix of protected plants, birdlife, and geological features, offered a fascinating glimpse into nature’s power and beauty.
Before heading back to Prague, we made a short but delightful stop in Františkovy Lázně, a charming spa town. Here we sampled mineral healing waters, tasted warm spa waffles, and picked up sweet souvenirs—a perfect ending to a perfect day.
We are extremely grateful to Euraxess Czech Republic for generously sponsoring this trip. Euraxess is part of a Europe-wide network that supports international researchers and their families, helping them settle, connect, and thrive in their host country. Thanks to their support, we were able to enjoy this wonderful day that combined history, culture, nature, and local flavors, leaving everyone with great memories and new experiences. We are already looking forward to our next adventure together!
