On Friday, September 5th, the community of international researchers, their families, and friends gathered in the lush green setting of the community garden in Suchdol for the annual International Garden Party of the Welcome Centre for International Scholars. The event was a particularly special occasion this year, as it marked the fifth anniversary of the Welcome Centre at the Czech University of Life Sciences.
The afternoon began with warm opening remarks from Prof. Michal Lošťák, First Vice-Rector and Vice-Rector for International Relations, followed by the ceremonial cutting of the beautifully decorated anniversary cake – a centerpiece that delighted both children and adults alike.
Close to 100 participants joined the celebration, including representatives from the Ministry of Interior, Euraxess Czech Republic, international relations offices of various faculties, and the community centre of Prague-Suchdol. Their presence underscored the growing importance of the Welcome Centre as a hub for international cooperation, community building, and support for our scholars.
Guests enjoyed a vibrant programme filled with live music performed by the talented guitar duo Johny & Michael, a professional barbecue with fresh delicacies, and an impressive variety of homemade international dishes brought by participants themselves. The buffet table was further enriched by traditional Czech desserts such as chodský koláč, bábovka, and plum cake with poppy seeds.
Beyond the food and music, the afternoon offered plenty of opportunities for fun and interaction. Attendees took part in sports games and a quiz competition with prizes, while children and adults alike explored the chronicle of the Welcome Centre, a newly compiled book capturing the centre’s five-year history and activities. Many participants contributed their own notes and reflections, leaving a lasting mark in this collective memory.
The atmosphere was described by one guest as “a true boost of energy,” and indeed the entire afternoon was filled with a sense of sharing and friendship. The biggest surprise, however, came from the weather: while rain fell in the surrounding areas, the garden itself remained dry and sunny, adding a magical touch to the day.
The event would not have been possible without the tireless support of colleagues from the International Relations Office and a group of dedicated students, who helped with preparations, food, logistics, and even cleaning up in the evening, when rain finally caught up with the team. To all of them, and to everyone who contributed dishes, music, or simply their good spirits, the Welcome Centre extends its heartfelt thanks.
The International Garden Party was not just a joyful celebration of the Welcome Centre’s anniversary, but also a beautiful reminder of the power of community and international friendship.
