On Saturday, April 26th, the Welcome Centre for International Scholars organized a delightful outing for researchers and their families—a day filled with history, nature, and community spirit in the heart of Prague.
Our journey began with a picturesque morning crossing of the Vltava River on the přívoz ferry P2, offering a tranquil start and scenic views of the city from the water. Once on the opposite bank, we strolled along the river, enjoying the fresh spring air and the peaceful ambiance, making our way toward one of Prague’s architectural gems—Troja Castle.
At the castle, we were treated to a guided tour in English, which brought to life the site’s fascinating history and rich Baroque heritage. We first admired the impressive exterior staircase, dramatically adorned with statues depicting a struggle between gods and giants. Within the castle, we explored its opulent interior, most notably the grand hall decorated with vivid ceiling frescoes celebrating the Habsburg dynasty, alongside mythological motifs and allegories of the four known continents. These masterful paintings, full of movement, symbolism, and detail, captivated adults and children alike.
From Troja Castle, our adventure continued with a scenic ascent through the St. Klára Vineyard with panoramic views of the city and river. After the morning’s cultural immersion, we paused for a well-deserved lunch.
Energized, we entered the Fata Morgana tropical greenhouse in the Prague Botanical Garden. This enchanting glasshouse offered a sensory feast—lush greenery, exotic blooms, and vibrant butterflies fluttering through the air. The Fata Morgana’s warm, misty environment delighted all, but it was especially magical for the children in our group, who explored it with wide-eyed wonder.
We concluded our day at the St. Claire’s Wine Shop, nestled in the vineyard. There, we toasted a successful outing with a glass of local wine, enjoying the company of colleagues and friends in one of Prague’s most serene settings.
It was a memorable day reminding us all of the beauty and inspiration that Prague has to offer.
