Seminar on Everyday Survival Tips in Czechia

On Thursday, October 3rd, 2024, the Welcome Centre for International Scholars, in collaboration with the Integration Centre Prague, hosted a seminar aimed at helping newcomers adapt to everyday life in Czechia. The presentation, delivered by Ms. Roksolana Fedorenko from the Integration Centre Prague, covered essential tips and practical advice to make the transition smoother for international residents.

The seminar touched on several key aspects of Czech life. Participants were introduced to dining etiquette, learning how to navigate restaurant customs, including tipping, and discovering the value of the traditional Czech lunch menu, known for its affordability and variety. Sustainable living practices were also a key focus, with detailed information on waste sorting, proper bin usage, and collection yards, reflecting Czechia's strong commitment to eco-friendly living.

Ms. Fedorenko also highlighted popular Czech sports and hobbies, such as hiking, mushroom picking, skiing, and rafting, while also emphasizing the country's deep affection for pets, particularly dogs, which are common in households and public spaces alike. Participants received valuable insights into the cultural "do's and don'ts," including the prevalence of smoking and gambling, which may come as a surprise to many newcomers. The discussion even touched on the Czech demeanor, explaining why locals may seem to be frowning—an often misunderstood aspect of their reserved nature.

The seminar also offered guidance on navigating Czech traditions and holidays, providing tips on gift-giving and participating in folk customs. Everyday etiquette, such as respecting personal space and even escalator rules, was also covered, helping participants avoid common social faux pas. Additionally, practical advice was shared on dealing with authorities, understanding bureaucratic processes, and grasping the local corporate culture.

Attendees enjoyed a taste of Czech hospitality, sampling traditional koláče pastries with blueberry, sweet cottage cheese, and plum jam toppings, as well as chlebíčky, the famous Czech open-faced sandwiches. These beloved snacks, small slices of bread with various spreads and garnishes, were first introduced in Prague in the early 20th century and remain a party staple to this day.

We hope that all participants found the seminar informative and helpful, and that the knowledge gained will enhance their daily experience in Czechia. From restaurant etiquette to cultural traditions, the event provided valuable tools for better understanding and integrating into life in this vibrant country.
