The European Commission has published the results of the evaluation of Horizon 2020 (H2020), the predecessor of the current Horizon Europe program, which ran from 2014-2020 with a budget of almost €80 billion.
During this period, it supported more than 35,000 projects submitted by applicants from 177 countries, resulting in nearly 4,000 patents and trademarks.
Scientists funded by H2020 have contributed to more than 276,000 peer-reviewed articles, and the program has supported 33 Nobel Prize winners.
The evaluation also made recommendations for improvement in the following areas:
- Broader participation
- further simplification and reduction of administrative burden
- Enhancing dissemination and exploitation of results
- Encouraging women's participation
- enhancing synergies with other initiatives at European, national, and regional level
These and other findings from the evaluation should serve to adjust the implementation of the current Horizon Europe program, but in particular, to prepare future research and innovation initiatives.
