The four best university basketball teams from across the country – the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Masaryk University, Jan Evangelista Purkyně University, and the University of Ostrava – battled for gold in the North Moravian metropolis. After a series of fierce matchups, the men’s team of CZU in Prague emerged victorious, becoming the new champions of the University Basketball League. The final games began on 30 April and culminated on 1 May. Prague universities celebrated a double triumph, with the women’s basketball trophy going to the players of the Prague University of Economics and Business.
The CZU basketball players have finally done it. On Friday, 1 May, they dominated the final of the University Basketball League in Ostrava and are bringing the trophy for the season’s best team back to Suchdol.
The CZU team went through this year’s competition in great style, so their advance to the Final Four came as no surprise. Consistent performances, a well-coordinated squad, and a confident style of play defined CZU throughout the season, and this was fully confirmed in the decisive matches.
In Ostrava, they first faced the home team, the University of Ostrava, in the semi-final. The hosts managed to keep pace only in the first half; after the break, CZU took control, began building a lead, and comfortably carried the game to a 90:73 victory.
In the final, they faced Masaryk University from Brno, and it was a game well worth watching. As in the semi-final, the balanced duel was decided in the second half, when CZU’s players showed greater composure and quality in the key moments. They gradually pulled ahead, gained a decisive lead, and never let it slip.
After another 90:73 victory, the championship celebrations could begin in full force. For CZU, this is a major achievement and confirmation that the team belongs among the elite of university basketball.
CZU is highly successful in academic sport and regularly wins medals at the Czech Academic Games. The basketball team´s current success further underlines the strong sporting tradition.
