Discovering the Secrets of Food – Do You Know What You Eat?

In cooperation with the National Museum of Agriculture in Prague and the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, the Ministry of Agriculture is organising the 11th edition of the educational competition Discovering the Secrets of Food – Do You Know What You Eat? for families with children and school groups. The event will take place on 2 and 3 October 2026 at the National Museum of Agriculture in Prague.

The competition focuses on the origin of food, proper food handling, healthy nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. Children will be asked to complete 10 activity stations featuring various tasks, quizzes and competitions. At the individual stations, they will learn to identify useful plants and farm animals, explore the origins of plant- and animal-based foods, recognise crop pests, and determine which foods need to be stored in the refrigerator after purchase, thoroughly cooked before consumption, and washed carefully.

They will also discover many interesting facts about digestion, the importance of staying properly hydrated, choosing healthy, nutritious foods, and the role of physical activity – all presented in a playful, entertaining way.

For each completed competition task, children will receive a stamp on their activity card. After collecting the required stamps, they will receive a certificate and attractive prizes at the finish. Education starts with the youngest generation, because healthy eating habits are formed in childhood.

Throughout the event, publications and educational materials from the Food Safety Information Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture will be available to the public. These materials focus on healthy nutrition, proper food handling and food safety.

Teachers will have access to workbooks for pupils in all primary and lower-secondary schools, accredited textbooks for older pupils, and other materials supporting the educational programmes Eating Healthily and with Pleasure and Nutrition in Health Education. The teaching materials are based on the World Health Organisation´s (WHO) basic hygiene principles, Five Keys to Safer Food.
