Forestry House: modern facilities for study and research

Construction of the Forestry House, a teaching wooden building of the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Science of the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, started on Thursday, January 15, 2026, with the ceremonial laying of the foundation beam. The modern two-story building, divided into teaching and multifunctional spaces, will be built on the CZU campus next to the High-tech Pavilion.

The Faculty of Forestry and Wood Science has decided to support the current trend of the renaissance of wood in construction with the Forestry House project. The modern two-story wooden building will serve students for teaching and scientific research.

The first floor will offer a classic classroom and outdoor facilities for teaching, the second will serve for student social activities, lectures, and meetings with professionals from practice. The entire building will be barrier-free and will follow on from the previously built High-tech pavilion. The FLD Forestry House project will bring several positive effects for students and the entire woodworking sector. It will provide high-quality facilities for teaching and accreditation of study programs, enable data collection for research, and connect teaching with practice. Students will gain real experience with modern technologies and the design of wooden buildings, thereby strengthening their competitiveness on the labor market.

Similar wooden faculty buildings in Europe inspired the project, such as the Park Wood House at the University of Kent or TUWI BOKU in Vienna. The main goal is to create a multifunctional educational building that provides students with a real-life demonstration of various structural elements of wooden buildings and allows them to participate in the construction process and subsequent operation. The building will include multiple types of wooden structures, will be equipped with modern technologies, including sensors and data loggers, and will offer ecological elements such as green roofs and vertical gardens.

The project faced several challenges, including misunderstandings of the term “wooden building”, criticism of the encroachment of greenery, and compliance with strict fire standards. These issues were resolved by appropriate architectural and technological modifications, such as the use of fire-resistant materials, optimization of window areas, and the introduction of modern detection systems.

The FLD Forestry House is a model of a sustainable, innovative educational building that will contribute to the development of the woodworking industry and support the CZU´s direction towards sustainable management of natural resources.

The architectural design of the Forestry House comes from the Mjölk Architekti studio.
