Compulsory school attendance was introduced as early as 1774 under the Habsburg empress Maria Theresia of Austria when she made it compulsory for all children between the ages of six to twelve to attend school. However, the history of Czech education reaches even further back in time. The oldest university in Central Europe. Charles University – has been established in 1348. The current literacy rate in the Czech Republic is above 99%.
Education in the Czech Republic is divided into public, private, and International schools. Overall, educational quality is high, and your child will be in good hands. School attendance is mandatory up until the age of 15, through to ninth grade.
Public Education
Pre-school education
Pre-school education for children aged 3 to 6 is provided by kindergartens (Mateřská škola), where children develop and learn basic behavioural rules, learning habits and communication skills. Kindergarten attendance is entirely at the discretion of the parents. Nevertheless, only a small proportion of five-year-olds do not attend this non-compulsory preparation for schooling.
