Long-term residence permit for the purpose of studies

This is normally a biometric residence card issued for a stay in Czechia longer than 90 days for the purpose of studies.

With a valid passport and residence card, it normally permits short travel within the Schengen Area.
For a study mobility longer than 90 days, you may be eligible for the special intra-EU student mobility procedure.
The procedure is not automatic. Your host institution and the destination authority must confirm the applicable requirements.
The Czech permit should remain valid throughout the mobility and your return journey.

Visa sticker

Long-term visa for the purpose of studies

This is a visa for a stay longer than 90 days, usually placed as a sticker in your passport. It is not the same document as a biometric residence card.

While valid, it normally permits short travel within the Schengen Area together with your passport.
A qualifying long-term study visa may be accepted under an intra-EU student mobility procedure, but this must be confirmed for the destination country.
Never assume that a visa and a residence permit are treated identically by the host country.

Special rules

Temporary protection or international protection

Protection status is not the same as a residence permit issued for the purpose of studies, even when its holder is a CZU student.

The intra-EU student mobility regime under Directive (EU) 2016/801 does not apply to beneficiaries of temporary or international protection.
A short trip and a study stay longer than 90 days must be assessed separately.
Obtaining a long-term visa or residence permit in another country may affect the status held in Czechia.

Individual assessment

Permanent residence, EU long-term resident status or residence as a family member

These statuses may provide rights that are different from those attached to an ordinary Czech study permit.

A family member of an EU citizen may have specific free-movement rights, particularly when accompanying or joining that EU citizen.
An EU long-term resident may have a separate mobility route under EU and national law.
The correct procedure cannot be determined only from your CZU student status.

Purpose other than studies

Employee Card, family reunification, business or another residence permit

A valid Czech residence permit issued for another purpose may allow short travel within Schengen, but it does not automatically create a right to undertake long-term student mobility abroad.

Your permit was not issued on the basis of your university studies.
The standard intra-EU student mobility procedure may therefore be unavailable.
A national visa, residence permit or another destination-country procedure may be required.

Travel warning

Extension pending, fiction of residence or bridging visa

You may be legally staying in Czechia while an extension application is pending even after your previous card or visa has expired. This does not mean that the application confirmation itself is valid for international travel.

A pending application alone is not a travel document.
You may need a Czech bridging visa to leave Czechia and return while the application is being processed.
A bridging visa does not replace any visa, notification or residence requirement imposed by the destination country.
