CZU team defeats CU in first University Basketball League play-off game

With a 69:62 victory over Charles University, the basketball players of the Czech University of Life Sciences moved closer to advancing to the final tournament of the University Basketball League. The first play-off game was held yesterday in the Sports Hall at Folimance.

The coach of the winning CZU team, Radek Švejdar, assessed the match with Charles University as follows: "We did not do very well at the beginning; we had a very low shooting success rate, which fortunately improved at the beginning of the second half. When we were already leading by nineteen, we thought we would easily overtake them. Still, the opponent made the defense quite aggressive and pressured us several times, so they corrected to the final minus seven. It will be even more difficult at home. But I am not afraid at home. We believe in ourselves there."

We will keep our fingers crossed! The second leg of the play-offs will take place next week, with both teams playing at the Czech University of Life Sciences, where home-field conditions can also play a role. The winning team will then advance to the final tournament of the national league, which will take place on May 1st and 2nd.

Basketball has a long tradition at CZU, and its teams are historically among the most successful. Three of our students were part of the golden basketball team at the Universiade in China in 2023. The basketball department is one of the founding members of the university's TJ. The men's team has long competed in the highest Prague competition, the A league.
