On Sunday, February 15th, the Welcome Centre for International Scholars organized a special excursion to the remarkable Stará čistírna odpadních vod v Bubenči in Prague. Although it was probably the coldest day of the week, the freezing temperatures did not prevent us from fully enjoying this fascinating monument of industrial engineering.
Despite having been out of operation since 1967, the plant remains in extraordinary condition. Massive pumps, intricate mechanical systems, and carefully designed infrastructure remain beautifully preserved, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience how wastewater treatment once worked in practice. Our guide walked us through the entire process, explaining in detail how wastewater moved through the facility and how each component contributed to keeping the city clean.
A particularly memorable moment was watching an archival film from the 1940s, which showed the daily work and hardships of the people who operated the plant. Their dedication reminded us how essential wastewater treatment has always been for protecting public health.
The highlight of the excursion was the short but exciting boat trip through the underground sewage canal, followed by a walk through the dark passages beneath the plant. This unique experience gave us a new appreciation for the hidden infrastructure that supports everyday life. Even today, with modern treatment facilities now serving the city, it is important to remember the engineering achievements that laid the foundation for these systems. Every time we flush a toilet or pour something down the sink, a complex system of engineering, maintenance, and expertise is working silently behind the scenes to protect our environment and our health.
Beyond its historical and technical significance, the site also offers a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere. The on-site coffee shop provides a warm and cozy place to relax after our tour. In the warmer months, the garden behind the plant offers a perfect place to sit outside, enjoy refreshments, and take in the unique atmosphere.
We are already looking forward to our next event and another opportunity to spend time together with our international research community.
