Healthcare

The Ministry of Health is the major regulatory body that sets the health care policy, regulates the system, and runs several health care providers. Most of the providers are owned by the state. The largest state insurance company is Všeobecná zdravotní pojišťovna (VZP) which insures about 60% of the population. CZU members of staff are insured with this public health insurance provider. Your statutory public insurance starts on the first day of employment.

About 95% of primary care services are provided by physicians working in private practice. You can register with any primary care doctor provided they accept your VZP medical insurance. However, you can change your physician every three months without restriction. You can also register to visit a specialist without a referral letter from your general practitioner. Secondary care services are offered by a wide spectrum of providers, such as private practice specialists, health centres, polyclinics, hospitals, and specialized inpatient facilities.

Who is covered?

  • You, as an employee, contribute 4.5%, and 9% is paid by your employer.

What to do if you need medical help?

  • Register at your general practitioner’s office, which accepts your VZP insurance card. Allow up to 2 to 5 months to process your request. Please contact our CZU Welcome Centre for an updated list of health professionals.
  • If you need to see a doctor urgently, you can visit the hospital's emergency room (Pohotovost).
  • If you need a pill prescription and do not have a general practitioner, please go to any hospital ambulance with a Czech-speaking person.

In life-threatening situations, call

Travelling outside of the Czech Republic

EU can travel with their European health insurance card to any European country. If you are a non-EU citizen and you want to visit other European countries, you will have to pay for travel insurance which would cover your stay abroad. For example, you can contact Uniqa, AXA, or Allianz insurance companies.

However, CZU will provide you with travel insurance in case of your employment-related travel.
