According to the new ranking of universities published by the Times Higher Education (THE) agency for 2025, only three Czech universities are in the first thousand. The Czech University of Life Sciences ranked third among Czech universities, following Masaryk University at the second and Charles University at the first place.
"We're not celebrating but looking for ways to move up. These most prestigious world rankings reflect our strengths and weaknesses quite well. It's excellent feedback for us," Rector Sklenička said about the results.
"Even other prestigious rankings such as QS, ARWU, i.e., the so-called Shanghai Ranking, Best Global University Ranking (BGUR), or Leiden Ranking confirm our position in the top 1000 of world universities, so our ranking in THE is certainly not accidental, but the result of our work. In ARWU, there are only 6 universities from the Czech Republic in the top 1,000; in QS, there are 9 universities in the first 1,000, just like in the Leiden ranking or 7 universities from the Czech Republic are in the top 1,000 in BGUR," added Vice-Rector Losťák.
The placement in THE reflects a significant qualitative shift in CZU's activities, which the mentioned ranking measures in 5 areas (Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, Industry, and Internationalization). Since 2017, when CZU first appeared in the THE ranking, it has risen from 9.1 points in ??Research Quality to 60 points out of a possible 100 for 2025. In the areas of Teaching and Research Environment, the increase is not so significant, and the data show that we must focus primarily on raising awareness of CZU as a quality university in the global space. This means intensifying cooperation with the best. Such an activity focus will also support further growth in the area of ??internationalization, which is also not as pronounced between 2017 (66.5 points) and 2025 (78.8 points) as in ??Research Quality. Even though the score in Industry (cooperation with the application sphere) is not bad (48.6 for 2025), it is the same as in 2017 (48.5 points), so we will not see an increase in it. These figures indicate another area for improvement in our quality.
