The Best CULS Sportsman

As part of this year’s Advent Concert, held in the graduation hall of the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague on 1st December 2016, the winners of this year’s top university sportsman/sportswoman contest for 2016 have been awarded by the Rector of CULS.

The javelin thrower Mr Jakub Vadlejch, currently studying at CULS Faculty of Economics and Management, received the crystal globe as the best CULS sportsman for 2016. Jakub had an extraordinary season this year. He ranked 8th at the Olympics men’s javelin throwing competition in Rio de Janeiro. He won the Diamond League Athletic Series 2016 in his discipline. From six competitions in this prestigious sports series, Jakub won three (in London, Paris and Zurich). He also achieved his personal best, with a throw of 88,02 m. He is one of the top athletes in his discipline worldwide. In the contest for the best athlete in the Czech Republic he ranked 5th in an overall selection.

Of course, it was quite difficult to compare results in various sports disciplines. Much depended on a subjective evaluation of each and every discipline by the selection panel. A total of 28 students were nominated for the prize. After deliberation the panel, chaired by the director of CULS Department of Sports, selected ten students who received a financial award from CULS Rector Prof. Jiří Balík, dr.h.c. Several sportsmen/sportswomen from CULS have achieved outstanding results in 2016 – four of them participated at the summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, with placements in the top ten, nearly winning medals.

The award giving ceremony preceded a well-attended concert given by the Czech violin virtuoso, Mr Václav Hudeček, accompanied by Ms Slávka Vernerová.
