The university campus in Prague-Suchdol has become a hub of environmental innovation. In 2025, CZU confirmed its role as a national leader when it defended first place in the Czech Republic in the prestigious international UI GreenMetric ranking, ranking 68th worldwide among more than 1,700 assessed institutions. In the QS Sustainability Rankings 2025, CZU also defended its leading position in the Environmental Impact category among 15 participating universities in the Czech Republic.
Thanks to its expert background, the support of all faculties, and investments in new study programmes, CZU is successfully fulfilling the concept of a “living laboratory” by applying scientific knowledge in climate change adaptation, the circular economy, and well-being to the management of its campus in Prague-Suchdol.
Cutting-edge technologies at the heart of the campus
One of the university’s technological highlights is its swimming pool water recycling system, thanks to which CZU, as the first university in the Czech Republic to do so, saves approximately 6,000 m3 of hot water annually. Significant progress has also occurred in recent years toward energy self-sufficiency. Electricity production from the university’s own photovoltaic systems increased by 77% year-on-year. Most of the infrastructure is now also monitored by the modern IoT platform ThingsBoard, which tracks energy consumption in real time and enables the precise calculation of the carbon footprint of individual buildings.
Biodiversity and circular principles
The university campus in Prague-Suchdol comprises 75% green areas, and we manage it with maximum respect for nature and minimal resource consumption. In 2025, we planted 1,141 shrubs and 672 perennials on campus, and green area maintenance occurs with minimal herbicide use. CZU also supports material cycles – directly on campus, we processed 148 tonnes of biowaste and returned it to the soil as cokpost through gardening work across the campus. Thanks to the systematic recycling of electrical equipment, the university also prevented the generation of more than 27 tonnes of electronic waste.
Innovation with social impact
The new Sustainability Strategy 2025+ also emphasizes social stability and equal opportunities. The university completed the preparation of its new Gender Equality Plan (GEP 2.0) and actively supports sustainable mobility through the “Green Erasmus” initiative, which 164 students and employees used in 2025. The university’s innovation potential is further developed by the Point One incubator, which currently supports more than 30 “green” startups.
The Czech University of Life Sciences Prague thus demonstrates in practice that a holistic connection between technology, excellent science, and social responsibility is the path towards a sustainable future. Thanks to its research excellence, with CZU ranking 58th in the world this year in the field of agriculture and forestry, the university clearly shows that it belongs among the progressive and modern universities of the 21st century.
Every year on 5 June, we celebrate World Environment Day – an international call to reflect on how we live, how we consume, and above all, how we care for our planet. This day reminds us that nature cannot be taken for granted. It is a gift that needs our attention, respect, and care.
World Environment Day was established by the United Nations in 1972. It aimed to raise global awareness of environmental issues and motivate individuals, communities, companies, and governments to protect nature actively. Each year is dedicated to a different theme – from plastic pollution and biodiversity protection to climate change. But its meaning always remains the same: to remind us that we have only one planet.
