Advent gifts from CZU employees: Recruitment of bone marrow donors and food collection

Sciences. Those interested could donate food to the needy and offer hope for life to the seriously ill. The food collection was extended until December 10, and nineteen volunteers signed up for the bone marrow donor registry.

Nineteen Hopes for Life

The recruitment of bone marrow donors, which took place in the CZU auditorium on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, means a chance for life for nineteen patients. That is the number of volunteers registered in the Czech National Bone Marrow Donor Register.

“At the Christmas event at CZU, we managed to register 19 new hopes for life for seriously ill patients around the world, and we owe everyone our huge thanks. We are not only happy with the recruitment itself, but also with the spread of the idea of ??bone marrow donation, which is equally important. The whole topic helps to humanize us and bring it closer to students not only by the Czech University of Life Sciences, but also by university hockey players who filmed a great invitation for the recruitment event right on the ice. We really appreciate this support,” says Martina Chmelová, founder of the Nábor hrdinů organization, adding her thanks to CZU for the perfect organization of the recruitment, great help with promoting the event, and also for allowing them to return to the university.

For patients with serious diagnoses, such as leukemia or lymphoma, treatment with donated bone marrow can be vital. Statistics show that out of about 120 registered donors, only one is suitable for a particular patient. And every fourth patient does not find a donor. The bone marrow donation occurs if a patient is seen for whom you are an ideal donor. The likelihood of such a match is one percent.

Donating bone marrow is a voluntary act. Anyone can withdraw the decision to become a donor and be removed from the bone marrow donor registry at any time without giving a reason.

Food and drugstore collection continues.

On Tuesday, December 2nd and 3rd, CZU once again joined the Giving Tuesday — World Generosity Day aid campaign through the National Food Collection. In previous years, university employees and students donated 170 kg of aid to it, and this year the food collection took place here for the fourth time. “Our goal is to improve the Advent season and Christmas for people in need, abandoned seniors, families in crisis, single parents and homeless people. Even a small amount of help counts,” says Anna Tvrdíková, aid coordinator at CZU.

Food collection is an act of solidarity that allows everyone to help in the simplest way – by donating non-perishable food and groceries. These can include canned goods, non-perishable items such as milk, sugar, pasta, instant soups, oil and basic children´s groceries.

On December 3, the collection container moved from the auditorium to the canteen in front of the ČZU Shop brick-and-mortar store. Those interested can continue to contribute their donations here until Wednesday, December 10.
