Advent is a time of hope: Become a bone marrow donor

The World Day of Generosity and Good Deeds, also known as Giving Tuesday, which falls on December 2nd this year, will continue at the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague with “Giving Wednesday”. On Wednesday, December 3rd, 2025, a recruitment event for bone marrow donors will take place in the auditorium.

For patients with serious illnesses, such as leukemia or lymphoma, a bone marrow transplant can be lifesaving. Statistics show that out of roughly 120 registered donors, only one is a suitable match for a specific patient. And one in four patients never finds their donor.

If you want to help change this, come to the foyer of the CZU Auditorium on Wednesday, December 3rd, from 10 am to 3 pm to register for the Czech National Registry of Bone Marrow Donors. Registration is free, painless, and takes only a moment. Any healthy individual aged 18-35 can complete it. All you have to do is fill out a questionnaire and wipe your mouth with a toothbrush. Your turn to donate bone marrow will come only if a suitable patient for whom you are an ideal donor is found. The chance of such a match is one percent.

“Recruitment events for bone marrow donors are part of many activities that we organize for students and employees at our university. One of them took place with great interest from donors during the University Sports Day in May. We believe that during the Advent season, there will be many more people interested in helping those who need it,” says Marek Šedivý, Director of the External Relations Division of the CZU in Prague.

Bone marrow donation is a voluntary act. Anyone can revoke their decision to become a donor and be removed from the bone marrow donor register at any time without giving a reason.
