Josef Hlávka Award for the best students of CZU Prague

On the eve of the 35th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, on Saturday, 16th November, 2024, the Josef Hlávka Awards were presented at the castle in Lužany near Přeštice. They are awarded annually by the Josef, Marie and Zdeňka Hlávka Endowment, the oldest Czech foundation founded by Dr. Josef Hlávka in 1904. The award is intended for talented students and graduates of Prague public universities and the Brno Technical University who have demonstrated exceptional abilities and creative thinking in their field, and for talented scientists of the Academy of Sciences under the age of 33.

Ing. Štěpánka Tesárková is a graduate of the master's degree program Information and Control Technology in the Agro-Food Complex at the Faculty of Engineering. She was nominated for excellent results in her studies, activities for the faculty beyond the scope of normal student involvement, and scientific work as part of her master's thesis. While working on her master's thesis, the student dealt with the use of IoT components in domestic animal husbandry. Here, she demonstrated the possibilities of using these devices and designed, constructed, and then tested them in practice.

The Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences nominated Ing. Monika Pilátová, a graduate of the master's degree program in Forest Engineering, who has always been among the excellent students. Her master's thesis entitled Monitoring intrapopulation variability of Norway spruce based on physiological, optical and phenological characters was evaluated above standard. The faculty recommended her for her extraordinary contribution to the field of forestry genetics and physiology. The student demonstrated extraordinary commitment, deep knowledge and the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical research.

On behalf of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Ing. Mijael Rodrigo Vargas Godoy, Ph.D., a graduate of the Environmental Modelling doctoral study program, was nominated for the prestigious award. He demonstrated exceptional abilities and creative thinking in his field and during his studies he published a number of scientific articles, most of which he is the first author. His dissertation improved the understanding of multi-source quantification methods and advanced approaches for assessing global and regional dynamics of the water cycle.

Pradeep Balasaheb Kumkar, a doctoral student in Applied Zoology at the Faculty of Agrobiology, Food and Natural Resources, is dedicated to fish conservation and the study of anthropogenic impacts on aquatic ecosystems. In addition, he has discovered several new fish species for science in collaboration with his Indian and Czech colleagues. His research has enriched the scientific community with significant knowledge in the field of the impact of anthropogenic activity on aquatic ecosystems, such as the impact of microplastics and other pollutants. He presents his results in renowned scientific journals. 

Ing. BSc. Abubakar Sadiq Musa, Ph.D. from the Faculty of Tropical AgriSciences is a graduate of the doctoral study program in Agriculture, majoring in Tropical Agrobiology and Bioresource Management. The faculty nominated him for exceptional contributions in the field of scientific research and academic endeavors. His research papers have been published in prestigious international journals and his presentations at major conferences and workshops demonstrate his ability to contribute to the scientific community.  

Ing. Veronika Váňová is a graduate of the master's degree program in Public Administration and Regional Development at the Faculty of Economics and Management. Her master's thesis on the topic of Statistical Analysis of Selected Indicators in the Field of Spa and Tourism in Selected Regions of the Czech Republic deals with the issue of spa and tourist industry in the Czech Republic. It focuses on describing the dynamics of the development of indicators, such as the number of guests in spa facilities or the number of overnight stays in accommodation facilities in selected regions. The results show that the Karlovy Vary Region achieves similar values ??in the spa industry as all other regions combined.
